Every season we will squeeze into your in box and fill you full of what’s what with
Citrus for the time of the year…we commence with winter and this is the best time
for enjoying and celebrating the wonderful plants that make up the large family of
citrus. It’s the time of the year when all we need to do to our citrus is admire them.

So feet up -  squeeze yourself a tall glass of juice and enjoy.

Winter Bounty

Winter is when citrus glow there brightest.  The colder temperature of winter is what turns those green baubles of fruit into deliciously brightly coloured ready to eat citrus.

Look around your neighbourhood and you’ll see trees laden with Oranges, Lemons and Cumquats, like funky little Christmas trees the colours of citrus lift the dullest day.

As the fruit turns to it’s winter colour, resist temptation to pluck all of the fruit from the tree. Taste a couple of the fruit to test the sweetness. The longer citrus fruit stays on the tree the tastier and sweeter it gets.

The winter weather acts like a natural fridge for your un-harvested citrus fruit, keeping it fresh, chilled and dry. The fruit is happiest sitting in amongst the branches, until you’re ready to carefully pick it for use in your kitchen.

Here’s a tip…….leave the stalk plug in harvested fruit, this gives you longer fruit bowl life……

Our Feature Citrus
The Navel Orange.

The Navel is large family of oranges, famously named because of its little belly button bottom.

Navel’s are the winter orange -coming into season just when you need their health boosting Vitamin C the most…

Navels are terrific for juicing and eating. They are an extremely juicy, full flavoured, seedless fruit.  Navels have brightly coloured skin which easy to peel.

Navels are a delight to grow, producing large crops of tasty fruit.

The Citrus Splitzer®  Orange & Lemon and Orange & Mandarin are combined with a type of Navel Orange – Navelina.

Navellina is a slightly smaller tree with a medium sized fruit that matures early with a delicious flavour.

Other delicious Navel oranges are the Washington Navel and Lanes Late Navel

Orange compote is wonderful as a topping for breakfast cereals so maybe
double the recipe?

What do Citrus love in Winter?

What they like at this time of the year is admiration. Be mindful of keeping grass and weeds away from the trunk.

Citrus planted in the garden like to be well mulched from the trunk to the drip line, this section is best left void of any plant growth which would compete with the tree…

Citrus Fire Starters.

Don’t throw away your citrus peel - dry it out thoroughly to use as natural safe fire starters.

When you next light a fire use your dried peel.  The citrus oil contained in the skin ignites readily and creates a fragrant and fun way to get your fire going..
